The eight kūṭas
- Varṇa — 1 guṇa. The signs in four classes, Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer the first; the point when the groom's class is the same or higher (6.22).
- Vaśya — 2 guṇas. Which sign is subject to which: all but Leo to the human signs, all but Scorpio to Leo (6.23).
- Tārā — 3 guṇas. Count from each one's star to the other's and divide by nine: a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 is bad (6.24).
- Yoni — 4 guṇas. Each star's animal — horse, buffalo, lion, elephant and the rest; enemies score least (6.25–26).
- Graha-maitrī — 5 guṇas. The friendship of the lords of the two Moon signs (6.27–28).
- Gaṇa — 6 guṇas. The stars as deva, manuṣya and rākṣasa, nine of each (6.29–30).
- Bhakūṭa — 7 guṇas. The two Moon signs: 6/8, 5/9 or 2/12 from each other score none (6.31).
- Nāḍī — 8 guṇas. The three nāḍīs of nine stars each: both in one nāḍī score none (6.34).
Faults the text sets right
Muhūrta Chintāmaṇi does not stop at the count. It names the cases where a fault does not hold; horoAstro shows each as a note beside the points.
A bad bhakūṭa is set right by one lord of both signs, the sign lords' friendship, the navāṃśa lords strong and friends, a clear tārā, or vaśya — always with the nāḍī clear.
Muhūrta Chintāmaṇi 6.32
When the sign lords and the navāṃśa lords are friends there is no gaṇa fault; a good bhakūṭa removes the lords' enmity, and the lords' friendship a bad bhakūṭa.

Questions
How many guṇas are needed for marriage?
Muhūrta Chintāmaṇi gives the points of each kūṭa, not a pass mark. The Hindi commentary of the edition we read takes 18 or more of 36 as fit. horoAstro shows the total, every kūṭa with its verse, and the faults the text sets right.
Can I match by nakṣatra only?
Yes — by the two births, or by the two nakṣatras and their pādas.
Is Manglik (mangal dosha) checked?
Not as a kūṭa: it is not one of the eight of Muhūrta Chintāmaṇi 6.21. Each chart's 7th house, with Mars and the other planets in it, is read in that person's own reading from Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, chapter 18.
