Vedic astrology, from its own source

In short: Vedic astrology (jyotiṣa) is, in its own words, the best limb of the Veda, with three branches: horā, gaṇita and saṃhitā (BPHS 1.2); of these, horā — reading a person's life from the birth chart — is the best (1.3). Its root text is Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, which reads the twelve houses, the planets, sixteen divisional charts, six kinds of strength, the yogas and the daśās.

Jyotiṣa is one of the six limbs of the Veda. Its branch for reading a person's life, horā, is set out most fully in Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, a dialogue in which the sage Parāśara teaches his disciple Maitreya. horoAstro is built on that text, verse by verse, with seven other classical books read beside it.

What the text says it is

Astrology (jyotiṣa) is supreme, holy and secret, the best limb of the Veda, with three branches: horā, gaṇita and saṃhitā.

Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 1.2

Of these three, horā is said to be the best.

Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 1.3

What a reading is made of

  • Houses (bhāva): twelve, each with its own matters (chapter 11).
  • Planets (graha): seven and the two nodes, with their natures, friendships and dignities (chapter 3).
  • Divisional charts (varga): sixteen, each for a part of life (chapters 6–7).
  • Strength (bala): six kinds, added up in virūpas (chapter 27).
  • Yogas: combinations, from the nābhasa yogas to rājayogas and dhana yogas (chapters 35–42).
  • Periods (daśā): the timing of results, chiefly the Viṃśottarī (chapter 46).
  • Aṣṭakavarga: the eight-fold points, given so that mixed results can be read without contradiction (chapter 66).

Why the root text first

Modern books mix many authors, and their rules contradict each other. Parāśara's text has its own rules for weighing one result against another, so horoAstro reads it first and settles every clash by its rules. The other classical books it uses — Phaladīpikā, Jātaka Pārijāta, Praśna Mārga, Muhūrta Chintāmaṇi, Sarvārtha Chintāmaṇi, Laghu Parāśarī and Karma Vipāka Saṃhitā — are read beside it, each line with its own verse. Every line of a reading can be traced to a verse.
